After becoming a significant global player in the world economy and the global geostrategic calculus, China now seeks to redefine the normative framework that determines how states engage with their citizens and with each other.

In doing so, the Chinese state poses a grave threat to the notion of universal human rights, as evidenced in its devastating crackdown on the country’s Uyghur minority. In order to safeguard the recognition of universal human rights, the world’s liberal democracies must take a united, principled stance on condemning the indiscriminate mass observation and incarceration of Uyghurs.
